October 24, 2012

GERMANTOWN, Md., Oct. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite solutions and services, today announced that Dean A. Manson, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of Hughes and its parent company EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ: SATS) was named Outstanding Chief Legal Officer by the Washington Metropolitan Area Corporate Counsel Association (WMACCA) at its 8th annual awards reception held on October 18, attended by more than 400 people from the legal and business communities.

WMACCA is the second-largest regional in-house bar association in the United States, and these annual awards honor the region's leading in-house practitioners and departments in several categories. Manson was named Outstanding Chief Legal Officer for his exemplary work on integrating the legal departments of EchoStar and Hughes. Following the 2011 acquisition of Hughes by EchoStar, Manson was named executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of EchoStar and tasked with integrating the two legal departments of more than 30 attorneys, non-attorney professionals and support staff.  At the same time, Manson was the lead lawyer on two important transactions—a successful bid by EchoStar for two orbital slots auctioned in Brazil, and obtaining licenses enabling the launch of Hughes's new EchoStar 17 satellite. WMACCA also selected the Hughes legal department as a finalist for the Outstanding Large Law Department award.

"We are very proud of Dean and his achievements over the course of his career at Hughes," said Pradman Kaul, president of Hughes. "Integrating the legal teams of two companies certainly presented major challenges and Dean was able to guide and encourage his team to achieve a smooth transition."

"We are pleased to have Dean on board at EchoStar and congratulate him on this prestigious award," added Michael T. Dugan, chief executive officer of EchoStar.

"On behalf of the entire team who worked tirelessly to achieve a successful integration, I am honored to receive this recognition from our peers in the in-house legal community," said Manson. "It has been an eventful year and I look forward to even greater successes for Hughes and EchoStar."

Prior to joining Hughes in 2000, Manson was with the law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Princeton University and a Juris Doctorate from Columbia University School of Law.
