Hughes Introduces New Technology that Delivers End-to-End Quality of Service and Better Application Performance over Broadband

November 13, 2012

GERMANTOWN, Md., Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite networks and services, and a leading provider of managed network services, today announced the availability of its new HS1200 optimization appliance that transforms "best-efforts" broadband solutions into enterprise-grade WANs, delivering powerful Quality of Service (QoS) and superior application performance.

The HS1200 is ideal for companies in industries with many branch locations, such as retail, hospitality, restaurants and banking, that want to enjoy the benefits of running all their voice and data applications on a single converged network. It works seamlessly in networks using Cisco® or Fortinet® routers, giving companies the ability to run real-time applications such as voice and video over broadband WANs without having to invest in expensive MPLS.

"Enterprises are experiencing unprecedented growth in remote branch traffic, often exceeding the WAN's capacity to deliver consistent performance across all applications," said Robert Mason, managing vice president, Gartner. "Interest in new cloud services and the growth of real-time voice and video applications demand that whatever WAN solution is chosen, it must support true end-to-end QoS and enough bandwidth to deliver the performance required."

The HS1200 incorporates Hughes ActiveQoS and Hughes ActiveCompression technologies which address the two key performance issues facing broadband WANs — lack of QoS and poor application performance due to inherent network variability. ActiveQoS monitors and classifies applications in real-time, ensuring that voice or other critical applications are delivered with high quality despite variable broadband performance. Concurrently, ActiveCompression maximizes application bandwidth through a patent-pending approach that dynamically chooses the optimal compression based on the traffic type. ActiveCompression creates additional "virtual bandwidth" at each location, reducing bandwidth utilization by up to 99%. On a fully loaded circuit it delivers up to 500 times faster Web performance and up to 50 times faster thin client performance for applications such as remote desktop. As a result, companies enjoy better application performance without costly bandwidth upgrades.

"The HS1200 with ActiveQoS and ActiveCompression helps to mitigate the inherent network variability of broadband networks, such as latency, jitter and congestion," said Sampath Ramaswami, senior director of strategic planning at Hughes. "It enables distributed enterprises to combine separate voice and data networks into one cost-effective converged network."
